An operating system for reading

Turn your old Android into a calm reading device.

Connect a spare phone to your laptop and Quire converts it into a dedicated e-reader: no apps, no feeds, no notifications. Just your library and a quieter screen.

WaldenCh. 2

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach.

I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary.

One purpose

Boots straight into your library. The book is the interface: no app drawer, no feed, nothing to scroll but the page.

No distraction

No notifications, no store, no social apps. Quire removes the noise layer instead of hiding it behind focus mode.

Measured power

Charcoal pages, quiet radios, and reader power defaults make a spare phone useful again between charges.

Reversible

Your device and your files stay yours. Restore normal Android whenever you want the phone back.

01How it works

Five calm steps. About ten minutes.

Open Quire on a laptop, connect the phone by USB, and let the browser handle the technical work. You never touch a command line.

01

Prepare phone

Factory reset the Android and skip Google sign-in so Quire can take reader-owner mode.

02

Enable USB debugging

Pick the closest phone guide, unlock Developer Options, then approve USB debugging.

03

Connect reader

Plug the phone into this laptop, choose it in the browser prompt, and keep it awake. No local ADB install is needed.

04

Sign in and optional sync

Verify the conversion on your account. Connect Google Drive if you want book sync.

05

Install Quire OS

The site installs the reader, sets device-owner mode, applies power settings, and reboots.

A laptop or desktop

Setup runs on the computer, not on the phone.

Chrome or Edge

Safari and Firefox cannot run USB setup.

A factory-reset Android

Skip the Google account during Android setup.

02What it becomes

A reader, and nothing else.

Quire owns the whole screen. Library, current book, inbox, and the few settings that matter.

If something looks off.

Which phones work?

Most Android phones from the last several years. The important rule is setup state: the phone must be factory reset with Google sign-in skipped so Android lets Quire take reader-owner mode.

Why Chrome or Edge, and why a laptop?

Setup talks to the phone over USB straight from the browser. Chrome and Edge support that WebUSB path on desktop; Safari and Firefox do not.

It says no device found.

Connect the phone with USB, unlock it, make sure USB debugging is on, and approve the “Allow USB debugging” prompt for this computer. Then run the check again.

My phone is already set up.

Android only allows conversion before normal phone setup is finished. Factory reset the phone, skip the Google account, enable USB debugging, then run setup again.

Can I undo it?

Yes. Restore returns the phone to normal Android, removes owner mode, drops Quire as the home screen, and releases the reader slot when the phone can reach the cloud.

Where do my books come from?

Add EPUB or PDF files through Book Drop on the web, or connect Google Drive and use a Quire Books folder. The reader mirrors supported files into its local library.

Give one old phone a second, quieter life.

Free to check. Ten minutes to convert. Reversible whenever you want it back.
